BGT

Welcome to the BGT website.
(formerly known as Burmah Gas Transport)

BGT controls and operates a fleet of eight identical Moss Rosenberg type LNG carriers. These vessels were built in succession between 1977 and 1979 by the Quincy Shipbuilding Division of General Dynamics. From each vessel’s delivery until the end of 1999, all eight vessels served in the Indonesia to Japan trade under a transportation agreement with PERTAMINA, the Indonesian State Oil and Gas Company.

This trade was the largest LNG transportation project in the world consisting of approximately 8 to 9 million tons of LNG or 150 to 160 cargoes annually. From January 2000, six of the eight vessels were extended in the Indonesia to Japan trade under a long term time charter arrangement. This charter arrangement will run to the end of 2010. The remaining two vessels were employed under alternative short term charters and are now employed on long term charters in other LNG projects, servicing Europe and Korea from Qatar and Indonesia.

The vessels are meticulously maintained to exacting standards in shipyards under a “home doctor concept”. Under this concept, the same vessel returns to the same shipyard for periodic maintenance and repair.

All eight vessels were subjected to an independent Longevity Study, conducted by Lloyd’s Register, to ensure that they were capable of providing reliable and safe transportation. The inspectors concluded that the vessels are in sound condition, and will continue to provide safe and reliable LNG transportation.

To reduce operating costs, all eight vessels were transferred from the U.S. to the Marshall Islands registry during 2000.

BGT maintains its head office in the US in Stamford, Connecticut and an operations support office in Osaka, Japan.

BGT is owned 75% by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines and 25% by LNG Japan (a joint venture controlled by Sumitomo and Sojitz).
